A Beacon of Belonging on Campus
Sculpture for college campuses: Symbol of Unity and Progress
Commission by Mandel Foundation for Hillel International
Designed by Nancy Schwartz-Katz in collaboration with Pam Kahn, this sculpture is being created to affirm Jewish life on college campuses and to visibly say: you belong here. Rooted in Jewish tradition and shaped for the present moment, the sculpture’s open, rising forms feel welcoming rather than defensive lifting the eye and the spirit.
Three leaf-like pillars reference the foundations of Jewish life; Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Chasadim, while cascading olive branches symbolize students themselves: learning, growing, and moving forward. A stained glass element on the leaves catch the light, suggesting flame, hope, and continuity. A open, wind-turned globe at the top reminds students of their role in shaping a better world.
Placed outside a Hillel, the sculpture serves as a visible beacon of presence, pride, and possibility for Jewish students and for the campus community as a whole.
